Here are highlights from the trip:
As I’ve previously mentioned, my side of the family’s home state is Minnesota, and we have quite a few family members still living there. Recently my brother moved back with his wife Jana and their son Madden. For the record, I am totally not cool with them moving away, but am happy they are enjoying their new life in Minnesota. I couldn’t believe after knowing Nick for 10 years, I had never taken him to visit where I grew up. To fix that, we flew to Minneapolis in September 2014, and enjoyed spending time with Jeremy, Jana, and little Madden. Nick was also able to meet many of my cousins, aunts and uncles for the first time, while enjoying Minnesota in the perfect fall setting. Here are highlights from the trip: Lake Nokomis: We had to prove that Minnesota was the land of 10,000 lakes, so this was fitting for our first stop. Mall of America: Nick’s visit to Minnesota wouldn’t have been complete without a stop at the largest mall in America. Minneapolis Sculpture Garden: Set in downtown Minneapolis, this park is quite the artistic statement, and is free to the public. Local REI: Nick loves visiting REI stores in every state, so we made a pit stop at the Minneapolis location. Tobies Rolls: Anyone who knows the Franz family has heard them rant and rave about these “World Famous Rolls”. Located between the city of Minneapolis and our hometown of Cloquet, this was a must stop on any trip to and from the city growing up. Gordy’s: Another restaurant you have likely heard the Franz family rave about. Gordy’s opened in 1960 by Gordy and Marilyn Lundqust and is still owned and operated by the family today. Unfortunately they were closed for the winter so we settled for breakfast and coffee at the “warming house” next door. Jay Cooke Park: Seeing this park in the fall was nothing short of crazy, Nick is itching to come back and camp here. Duluth: Located in northern Minnesota on Lake superior, this port town was the “big city” to visit about 20 minutes from our small hometown of Cloquet.
